In an effort to increase participation in some of the events traditionally offered on Sunday of the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival, we will be restructuring the weekend activities by dropping some events and in some cases, rescheduling Sunday events to Saturday in 2015.
In spite of valiant efforts over the past few years to boost participation in the Rough Stuff Poker Ride by adding timed, untimed and guided tour competition divisions, the 2014 participant numbers continued to fall to an all-time low. While the participation numbers are an objective way to justify whether or not the event would continue, intuitively we speculate that other reasons are at play in the declining numbers.
It is certain that the closure of Telemark Lodge has impacted the number of potential participants in the Rough Stuff event. In addition, our eyes in the woods tell us that many people are opting to ride the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) single track trails on Sunday of the event weekend rather than participate in the Sunday program offerings. Who could blame riders for wanting to sample some of the best flow trails to be found in the region? We sure don’t!
Human and physical resources dedicated to not only the Rough Stuff Poker Ride, but the Children’s Bicycle Rodeo and the adult Sunday Funday events have become much greater than is justified by the meager participation.
That being stated, not all the fun of Sunday will be eliminated from the weekend offerings. Components of the Children’s Bicycle Rodeo including the short, fun Kiddie Crit will be presented on Saturday afternoon from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, several of the previous free, fat and fun Sunday Funday events including Bicycle Bowling, Bicycle Limbo, Flying Bunny Hop and more will be set up for greater participation on Saturday afternoon.
We feel that the greater number of potential participants on Saturday afternoon will boost participation in the children and adult fun activities to be offered prior to the awards presentation on Saturday afternoon.
